The Double Down

By Jeffrey Pankratz | MD-MT-DIY-PV

Harvesting two exceptional deer within an hour of each other created a memory that will never be forgotten. Early season rifle hunting can have its challenges, but we made the absolute best of it. Like most hunts, this one starts in the spring. This was the first full year I had been able to digitally scout with game cameras. So as spring came I made sure to put the cameras where I had seen the most activity over the last few years in a place I call the “honey hole”. This area of northeastern Montana consists of rolling hills of farm and pastureland with coulees full of thick brush for mature mule deer bucks to hide in.

Over the years I have come to really enjoy mature, mule deer hunting. I grew up in typical small town Montana where fall consisted of football and hunting season. Hunting wasn’t big in my immediate family, but I became very interested at an early age and picked up what I could from my cousins and family friends. I spent the summers on my dad and uncle’s ranch learning the meaning of long summer nights while piquing my interest in the mule deer I watched while working. This led to an obsession pursuing stately, mature animals.
