Montana’s New Elk Management Plan

By Dan Pickar

Montana recently published their new elk management plan for moving forward. This has raised a lot of scrutiny among the general public and private landowners as there are many aspects that are pertinent for gaining ground in problematic areas around the state. Montana’s current trend that we are seeing are elk populations increasing on private land areas of the state (eastern portion) and populations shrinking on large tracts of public land, mostly in the western part of the state. The western part of the state like Region 1 is a core super-predator area, including the unmanaged grizzly bear.

As you can imagine, FWP has a lot to tackle with management going forward. In the new plan you will find a unit breakdown for each district in the state and what the goal is moving forward using a less prescriptive and more objective goal focused management plan. For a deep dive on this make sure you check out my detailed analysis of this new plan on Taghub or in Eastmans’ Hunting Journals coming up in early 2024.
