Register Your Guns Like Your Cars?
By Rodger Holscher
If you live in California, you are no stranger to weird and unconstitutional gun laws. In yet another attempt to get you to register and ultimately confiscate your firearms, the California legislature is trying to pass new gun laws.
In the late hours of Feb 14th, 2024, California Democrats introduced Senate Bill 1160. This bill would make it mandatory to register your firearms every year like how you register your vehicle. There would be no individual exemptions to this bill. There would be no grandfathering of firearms. Every single gun that you own, whether passed down through your family or not, would need to be registered with the state and yearly fines paid to the state.
The bill does not specify what the yearly “registration” cost would be per firearm but if it is anything like the vehicle registration, it won’t be cheap. Failure to obey this law will result in an infraction charge and a fine amount of $1,000. So, if you have five (5) firearms and they aren’t yearly registered, that would be a fine of $5,000. Of course, the drafters of this bill left people an out.
If you do not wish to pay the annual registration fee, you can surrender your firearm to a Law Enforcement Agency for destruction. The bill specifically exempts local, state and federal agencies from this registration. It also specifically states that the exemption does not include personally owned firearms by any peace officer of those agencies.
California has had their “DROS” database for a long time and this database is accessible by Law Enforcement agencies. The new system would also be searchable by Law Enforcement agencies as well.
This is one of many attacks on our 2nd Amendment and if passed and signed into Law, it will no doubt be challenged in Court. Attached is a link to SB1160. I highly suggest you read it and get involved. While this is only in California, this will soon be coming to a state near you if it gets through in California.
