If I had to sum up the mule deer situation going into the 2017 season it would be “downside uncertainty.” This has been a bad winter, a very bad winter in the Cowboy State. At this point we just don’t know exactly how bad it will actually be on the deer herd though. There will be winter loss, we just don’t know if that is going to be in the order of 10% or 80%. I have heard reports of dead deer being found on the winter range already and we haven’t even hit the vicious spring storm corridor we generally see in April and May. This said, I have taken a conservative stance and downgraded nearly all of the deer areas where the winter has been the worst. This would be mostly the areas west of the Continental Divide and west of the town of Cody.
