Many decades ago the NM G&F imported game animals from other parts of the world and transplanted them into areas that didn’t have or support known native wildlife at the time or were a supplement to areas with low native wildlife populations. Over time the numbers have grown and are now offered as part of New Mexico’s big game animals and are available for public hunting. There are two types of hunts offered for each species. The off-range or statewide tags allow you to hunt almost anywhere within the state but is typically outside of the primary range for each species. In the case of Ibex and Barbary sheep these are over the counter tags and can be purchased from any license vender and are good for the entire year from April 1st 2017 thru March 30th 2018. The off-range/statewide tag for Oryx is by application only and has a month-long season.
