New Mexico offers outstanding elk hunting opportunities and everyone has an even chance at drawing a tag every year. The elk herds are at their peak in most Core Occupied Elk Ranges (COER) and are expanding in other areas outside of the COER. The G&F currently estimates the overall numbers statewide between 80,000 and 93,000 elk with good bull to cow ratios and calf to cow ratios. While New Mexico may not have as many elk as other western states, what in lacks in numbers it more than makes up for in quality. That being said, there are some areas that are better than others for that monster bull.
