Elk are doing very well in Utah, just like most western states. The number of elk taken each year is relatively low for the number of elk that live in the state. For 2018 the DWR approved a new opportunity for general season elk hunters. Now you will be able to hunt all three seasons (archery, muzzleloader, and rifle) with the general tag. The elk draw and points needed to draw fluctuated a little bit this year. Probably half the units point-crept up one or two points and the other half went down or two points or even more. This was attributed to popular areas and up trends and the DWR tag allocations changing in the given unit. As a whole tag allocations didn’t chance much, but you’ll be able to see each area’s fluctuations in the chart. The DWR does have certain harvest goals for each general area so if harvest exceed those they will reconsider this multi-season general again for next year. Seasons changed again this year as always, they just bumped them back a day for each the opening and closing dates.
