Montana Rocky Mountain goat hunting remains steady. Permit allocations are set to drop for the 2018 season thanks to the closure of seven districts across the state and a steep decline in the number available in the Crazy Mountains. Looking at the chart of harvest over the past decade, you will see that the total harvest statewide has remained fairly steady. But, we might be in for a drop in the future unless tag allocations bounce back. Hunter success has seen a slight uptick in recent years, averaging 81% the past two seasons of available data. The 2017 harvest success rates have not been tabulated by FWP as of press time so I relied on 2016 data for my forecasts.
