Montana MRS: Moose

Shiras’ moose are an amazing animal to behold. Hunting moose can be maddening. Almost as if you were chasing a ghost. In many places the per square mile density is low. Many days might go by without sighting a single bull. Harvest reports from last season have not been prepared yet, so we have to rely on the 2015 numbers. In 2015 the average duration of a moose hunt in Montana was 12 days. This is a 25% increase in hunting effort compared to 10 years past. The reason hunts are getting longer is that the moose population has declined in most areas of its range. Ask any old timer who lives in moose country about the current population, and you will hear, “It ain’t what it used to be.”
