Montana Rocky Mountain goat hunting continues to offer a substantial opportunity. Permit allocations have declined slightly over recent years, with 234 available last season. Looking at the chart of harvest over the past decade, you will see that the total harvest statewide has been steady. This is because hunter success has seen an uptick, with about 78% on average filling their tag the past four seasons. Harvest success was just over 82% last season. Some of this can probably be attributed to the milder than normal conditions which hurt elk and deer hunters but made it easier to get to goats later in the season. This coming fall should be like past seasons regarding harvest and opportunity.
